What a Birth Chart Is
A birth chart (also called a natal chart or Kundali) is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born, calculated for your birth location. It shows the positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets across the 12 zodiac signs and 12 houses. Every astrological reading — whether Vedic or Western — begins here. The chart is unique to you: birth date, exact time, and location all determine the final map. Even twins have subtly different charts.
The Three Core Layers
| Layer | What It Covers |
|---|---|
| Planets | The energy sources: Sun through Pluto (Western), Sun through Saturn + nodes (Vedic) |
| Signs | The style and coloring of each planet's energy |
| Houses | The life areas where each planet's energy plays out (career, relationships, health, etc.) |
How to Start Reading Yours
Start with three placements: your Ascendant (rising sign), your Sun sign, and your Moon sign. These form the core of your chart identity. Next, find the most prominent planet — the one in the 1st house, or the chart ruler. Then note any stelliums (three or more planets in one sign or house) — those areas are overloaded with energy and are life themes. Use the free tool below to generate your chart instantly.
