Degrees of Heightened Intensity
Critical degrees are zodiac degrees traditionally associated with heightened intensity, urgency, or special significance. The most commonly referenced critical degrees are: 0° and 29° of any sign (ingress and anaretic), and specific degrees in each modality group. For cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn): 0°, 13°, 26°. For fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius): 8–9°, 21–22°. For mutable signs (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces): 4°, 17°. A natal planet at a critical degree is considered more actively expressed.

Using Critical Degrees
When a natal planet falls at a critical degree, treat its house and sign themes as areas of heightened urgency and intensity — the energy is more concentrated and less easily ignored. In predictive work, when a transiting or progressed planet hits a critical degree in your chart, note the period as potentially significant regardless of other aspects. Many astrologers use critical degrees selectively — focusing primarily on 0° (new chapter) and 29° (culmination) as the most reliably meaningful of the set.
