A Reciprocal Exchange of Strength
Mutual reception occurs when two planets each occupy the domicile of the other. Venus in Scorpio and Mars in Libra are in mutual reception by domicile — Venus rules Libra (where Mars is) and Mars rules Scorpio (where Venus is). Each planet lends the other its home-sign authority. Mutual reception strengthens both planets significantly, even if they are in signs of detriment for each other — the reciprocal rulership partially compensates for the debility.
Types of Mutual Reception
| Type | Condition | Strength |
|---|---|---|
| Domicile | Each in other's rulership sign | Strongest |
| Exaltation | Each in other's exaltation sign | Strong |
| Mixed | One by domicile, one by exaltation | Moderate |
Reading Mutual Reception in Charts
Find mutual receptions by checking whether any two planets occupy each other's domicile or exaltation signs. Sun in Aquarius and Saturn in Leo form a mutual reception — each rules the sign the other occupies. In horary and natal astrology, mutual reception allows the planets to "swap" places symbolically — they can perform as if in their own signs. This can lift a planet out of debility and make an otherwise difficult placement surprisingly functional in practice.
