Each Planet's Home Sign
Rulership (domicile) describes the sign or signs over which a planet has natural authority. A planet in its own sign is at home — its energies are unobstructed and freely expressed. The traditional seven-planet system assigns each planet one or two signs; modern Western astrology adds Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto as outer-planet rulers. In Vedic astrology, the traditional seven-planet rulership scheme is maintained without outer planets.

| Venus | Taurus, Libra |
| Mars | Aries, Scorpio |
| Jupiter | Sagittarius, Pisces |

Why Rulership Matters
The sign ruler governs the affairs of every house that sign occupies on the chart wheel. If Libra sits on your 7th house cusp, Venus rules your 7th house of relationships — Venus's sign, house, and condition tell you about the quality and nature of your partnerships. In Vedic astrology, the ascendant ruler (lagna lord) is the single most important planet in the chart. Tracing rulerships reveals the hidden connections between house topics in any chart.
