How the Sky Talks to Your Chart
Transits are the real-time movements of planets through the zodiac, measured against your natal chart. When a transiting planet forms an exact aspect to a natal planet or angle, the themes associated with both the transiting and natal planets are activated in the relevant house and life area. Transits are the primary timing tool in Western astrology — they describe the timing of external events, developmental phases, and life chapter changes.
Transit Speed and Significance
| Planet | Approx. Sign Duration | Effect Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Moon | 2.5 days | Hours to days |
| Sun/Mercury/Venus | 1 month | Days to weeks |
| Mars | 6–7 weeks | 1–3 weeks |
| Jupiter | 1 year | Weeks to months |
| Saturn | 2.5 years | Months |
| Uranus/Neptune/Pluto | 7–21 years | 1–3 years |
Reading Transits in Practice
Focus on outer planet transits (Jupiter through Pluto) to natal planets and angles for the most significant timing indicators. Inner planet transits are triggering influences — important only when they coincide with a slow-planet transit. When multiple planets simultaneously transit the same natal point, the period becomes especially activated. Track transits using an ephemeris or astrology software; note the exact date of the first pass, retrograde contact (if any), and final direct contact for the full arc of each major transit's story.
