The 120-Year Timing System
Vimshottari Dasha (विंशोत्तरी दशा) is Vedic astrology's primary timing system, mapping 120 years of planetary periods onto your lifespan. "Vimshottari" means 120 in Sanskrit. The system is calibrated from your birth Nakshatra — specifically, how far through your birth Nakshatra's ruling planet's period you were born determines exactly where your Dasha sequence begins. This gives every person a unique, personalized planetary timetable.
How the System Layers
Vimshottari operates at three levels of time resolution:
- Mahadasha — major period (6–20 years per planet)
- Antardasha — sub-period within each Mahadasha
- Pratyantardasha — sub-sub-period for precise month-by-month timing
Each sub-period's planet interacts with the Mahadasha lord — mutual relationship between those two planets determines the flavor of that time window.
Predicting Events With Vimshottari
Cross-reference Dasha periods with transits (Gochara) for event-level precision. A major event — marriage, career change, health crisis — almost always coincides with a Dasha planet that rules the relevant house being triggered by transit simultaneously. Determine your current Mahadasha and Antardasha, then look at which houses those two planets rule in your chart. Events occur in those life domains during that window.
